A fibreglass shower base comes in three broad forms: a one-piece moulded pan with integral upstands, a moulded pan sealed to separate wall panels, or a full moulded enclosure. The difference between them is simply how many joints the water has to get past.

Within those, the tray is specified by entry style as well: hobbed with a raised edge, low-profile with a shallow step, or hobless for level entry. The entry style drives the floor build-up underneath, so it is a structural decision rather than a cosmetic one and should be settled at design stage.

One-piece units suit new build and repeat projects where the room is designed around the unit. Pan-plus-panel systems give more flexibility on wall height and layout, which makes them useful in refurbishments. Full enclosures are the standard choice where an entire wet area is delivered complete, as in accommodation or camp projects.

Factors to Consider: Size, Shape and Drain

Three measurements decide whether a base fits, works and drains. Getting any of them wrong is expensive to discover after delivery.

Size

Measure the opening, not the old base. Existing units are often out of square, and a nominal size on a label is not a guarantee of the footprint you need.

Shape

Square and rectangular use a standard bathroom most efficiently. Corner and quadrant units buy back floor space at the cost of internal room to move.

Drain

The waste position has to line up with the drainage already in the floor. Confirm waste location, the fall built into the pan, and available trap depth.

On a concrete slab, trap depth is often the constraint that decides which base you can use at all. Confirm it before you order rather than after the unit is on site, because that single measurement can rule out an entire product range.

Benefits of a One-Piece Moulded Fibreglass Shower Base

The argument for a single moulded component is really the argument against joints. Almost every wet-area failure starts at a junction, and a one-piece base removes the most common one entirely.

What one-piece construction buys you

  • No floor-to-wall junction: the coving is moulded in, so the classic failure point does not exist.
  • Consistent fall: the gradient to the waste is formed in the mould rather than screeded on site and hoped for.
  • Non-absorbent surface: nothing to soak up water, no grout to stain or degrade, and cleaning is a wipe rather than a scrub.
  • Fast installation: one item to set, level and connect, instead of waterproofing, screeding, tiling and grouting with drying time between.
  • Light: a fraction of the weight of the tiled equivalent, which matters on upper floors and in refurbishments.

The trade-off is honest enough. Colour and finish are set at manufacture, and a moulded unit is less easily adjusted on site than a tiled build. In exchange you get a wet area made to a repeatable standard rather than assembled in place.

Six things that decide the result

  • Support the pan fully: bed it as the manufacturer specifies. A base that flexes underfoot will eventually crack at the waste.
  • Level it, then check the fall: level frame, correct fall to the waste, confirmed with water before the walls go on.
  • Get the waste connection right first: dry-fit the trap and connection before anything is fixed down.
  • Respect the lapping order: wall linings lap over the upstand so water is always directed into the pan.
  • Use the right sealant: a neutral-cure sanitary silicone rated for wet areas, applied to clean dry surfaces.
  • Protect the surface: cover the base for the rest of the build. Most damage happens after installation, not from use.

What size fibreglass shower base do I need?

Measure the opening rather than the existing base, because older installations are frequently out of square and a nominal label size will not tell you what actually fits. Check the finished floor level, the thickness of the wall linings you are working to, and whether the door swings in or slides. Resist the temptation to undersize to make the fit easier, since that decision gives you a smaller shower for the entire life of the room.

Can a moulded base be installed on a concrete slab?

Usually yes, but trap depth is the deciding factor. The waste and trap need somewhere to sit below the pan, and on a slab that space is limited by whatever was cast in originally. Confirm the available depth and the existing waste position before ordering, because those two measurements can rule out an entire product range. Where depth is tight, a low-profile or hobbed base is often the workable answer.

Is a moulded base better than tiling?

It depends on what the project needs. For a one-off bathroom where appearance is the priority, tiling offers design freedom a mould cannot match. For repeated rooms, heavy shared use or anywhere downtime is expensive, a moulded unit wins on installation speed, consistency across every room, and the near-absence of joints that need resealing later. The honest test is repetition: the more identical rooms, the stronger the case.
